The Battle of Kerying, 15 APR 07
Ground Zeero Delares Victory, in the first major battle of its history, Against Ion Core, in the Dead-End System of Kerying, off the Hub System Arzi, Kor Azor.
However, this victory was not easily won. The forces of Ion Core, where both agressive and Brave, Ferocious in the defense of their land. An operation to destroy a small POS, which should have taken only a short time, instead streached over a 2 hour period, as we fought off wave after wave of fighter bombers, on our exposed battleship fleet.
Our numbers were few. Our killboards count 38 Participants, against 62. I expect Ion core to report diffrent numbers, but the general thrust was the same.
We deployed several tactics. We Used Captials to break up their fleets and weaken resolve, before we struck with the main force. Against commen convention, we split our forces to ensure that no effective resistance could form across Arzi and Kerying. By the time they had massed their fleet, they had suffered several loss's. Our dread fleet had destroyed two battleships, forcing many people to flee the Arzi Station in Frigates, so that their battleships wouldn't be destroyed. This removed many of them from the fight, until the later stages of the battle, effectivly spliting the power of their fleet, and giving us a small advantage over their numbers.
We also engaged and destroyed a cruiser fleet that was one jump ahead of us, heading to Arzi, which we beleive was under the false impression of our true size, as our fleet was composed almost entirely of battleships.
Then we went to the POS, in Kerying, leaving dreads in place to camp the majority of their fleet into the station. We Jumped one dread to us to destroy the POS, and with 2 carreirs in reserve at our home base should thing get dicy, we began the attack.
When they attacked our fleet, at the POS, they also made a secondary tactical error, of attacking us with many short range vessels. Much of their battleship fleet was station locked. They crawled from their POS sheilds one at a time, and using focus fire, scracthed out the first dent of Victory.
We destroyed enough vessels, perhaps 30 or more, that their subsequent fleets were within our ability to battle in the open.
However Ion Core was not a stupid enemy. And soon after, we found ourselves beseiged by fighter bombers, and even shuttles with fighter escort. Their capital fleet was protected by a second POS in the same system.
every 10 minutes we found a new wave of fighter weilding frigates, cruisers and battleships bearing down on us. We destroyed and podded many enganging forces, but each wave brought new death to our ranks. One battleship, then two, then three. Soon we had lost 1/3 of our invading number. Their numbers were limitless. Their resolve was high. It is fortunate that i serve with men, whose resolve was higher, despite the fear we all felt.
However, our strategy proved true. The battle ended with the destruction of their POS, and the collection of over 10m3 of loot. Eve-net System Maps Report that over 133 ships were destroyed in the system of Kerying on April 15th, 2007. We inflicted Loss's of 113, Losing only 13. 20 of the enemy kills were pods.
The numbers are deciving, as many of the ships lost by ION Core, were in fact very cheap and strategilly expendable, but when all is tallied, more loss's were inflicted upon our enemy, in terms of both ISK, effort and ships.
Ion Core was a valient enemy. And worthy of anyones praise for their tenacious, aggresive, and intelligent defense of their assets. I have nothing but respect for their defense. Had we miscalculated in the slightest, this could have easily gone the other way.
